TAB Christmas Marathon

Since Easter, our established members of TAB (TotesAmazeBells, St Ed’s youth club) have been welcoming several new young people to the group. They have settled in quickly and joined in all the activities enthusiastically, not least the bell-ringing in the tower and the hand-bells. Leading up to Christmas, varying combinations of young people rang bells in several venues, firstly taking to the streets of Crickhowell for the switching on of the Christmas lights and then in 3 venues during the Totally Locally event. The same evening some rang the church bells and other performed beautifully for the High School Carol Service. We visited Glaslyn Court again to entertain the residents one Saturday morning and were invited to ring at Nevill Hall Hospital’s Carol Service one evening. Both went down really well. The ringing for the year was rounded off by chiming carols on the tower and hand-bells for St Edmund’s Carol Service. All members rang beautifully and contributed to the lovely atmosphere of this special occasion.

TAB members were not only busy ringing bells during December, they contributed their ideas to the writing of the Nativity play for the Crib Service and worked really hard practising their parts. Those who were not able to take part in the play (away on holiday) helped to make the excellent props. We also had the benefit of a friend who is a retired drama teacher, who came with wise advice and great support.

This year we told The Story from the perspective of The Angels, who expertly relayed the roles they played during the various sections of the story (it wasn’t just Gabriel who did all the work!). The Angels enjoyed a bit of banter between them and part described and mimed what happened to the main characters in this amazing event.

At various points in The Story, an Angel went out into the young audience to fetch a few who had been primed and dressed up to be Mary, Joseph, Shepherds and Magi, to follow The Star to the stable on stage. At the end, everyone wearing costumes was brought onto the stage by the Angels to complete the tableau of the final Nativity scene. It was quite moving. I was very proud of all who took part and very grateful to everyone who helped in the background with directing, staging, music, audio-visual effects, props, dressing up, etc.  We all enjoyed bringing the story of this incredible event to our wonderful Community and Visitors.

If you know of any young people in year 6 or above who would like to join TAB, we would love to welcome them to our weekly club on Thursday evenings and our tower bell practices on the
1st Thursday each month. There are details on the church website or do get in touch with me on 01873 812093 or 07976 737665 or I look forward to hearing from you.
