The current youth group at St Edmunds was started by four enthusiastic young ringers nearly in 2013 as an extension to our fortnightly tower-bell practices. We rang the bells for half an hour then played games etc. for an hour.
Soon afterwards, we were lent a set of 12 hand-bells by St Elli’s church in Gilwern. We called the youth group TotesAmazeBells (TAB) and started to learn to ring the hand-bells during club time. We continued with the tower bells on an extra evening and called it OnlyBellsAloud (OBA).
In club we still practice hand-bells during most sessions and enjoy a variety of different activities, including crafts, games and quizzes, and we have visitors sharing their talents or interests and learn new skills. We’ve also made pancakes and other food, written to pen-pals at the School in Rukungiri, and learnt about the Bible and its various characters and discuss issues which relate to our lives today.
In July we have a BBQ and games evening at a barn and welcome new members who have joined us from the summer holiday club. We’ve also enjoyed activity days out.
During the year we have been invited to ring hand-bells at various events and venues, especially leading up to Christmas, culminating in the Carol Service, and the ringers are gaining skill and confidence every year. Several times we have also enjoyed writing and performing a play at the crib service, discovering hidden talent.
OBA practice day and time is variable. All ages welcome.
TAB is every Thursday 3.30 – 5.30pm in the Parish Hall, St Edmund’s Church or, weather permitting in a park. Come and join the youth club if you are in school year 6 or above, or would like to help.
