Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.1 Peter 4:10
This is a good starting point for answering the question “How do I get involved in a local church, such as St Edmund’s?” It does not presume on the type, extent or nature of a person’s gifts from God. It does not assume any particular hierarchy of gifts. It simply assumes that we each will be recipients of gifts from God, whether these are physical, spiritual, technical or practical.
If you read this part of the New Testament, you will find that the Apostle sets this challenge of discovering and using gifts in the context of thoughtfulness, of prayer; of love for one another; of making space for others.
How does any of that match up with
- what you know about yourself
- what your past experience has taught you
- what others seem to value about you
- the sort of things you get excited about
- the constraints of time, priorities and energy
You might find it helpful to discuss this in an exploratory way with the Rector, the Deacon or someone else who leads in the church.
Being clear about what gifts you have received from God will be a cause for thankfulness to him. It is also a good first step towards finding the best way for you to be involved in this local church.
